LEARN TO SEW by Sewing Simple Items

This course begins with basics; learning hand stitches, becoming familiar with sewing vocabulary, and making samples. The student is encouraged to collect a sewing kit of a few tools of the trade.  A pin cushion is constructed for adding to the sewing kit. Tips on method are prolific throughout the 14 lessons. Patterns are made for the first items to save on steps to finish a project.   Later on, the student is encouraged to make patterns to fit her own self in order to sew articles of clothing for herself. Labeling of pattern pieces should be hand printed. Save the patterns in clearly labeled envelopes.

Saying a little prayer to Our Lady and one’s Guardian Angel for help to do these projects well is recommended as a help for successful outcomes. Do not give up if something has gone awry. Take out the mistaken stitches and correct the mistake if that’s the best solution. Sometimes one may need to trim away the mistake or cut a new piece and insert it. If one is tired take a break and come back with renewed attention. Use tricks to sew straight seams. Double check pinning of right sides and wrong sides as the case may be.  Measure and double check lengths before cutting out fabric. Be on guard to avoid discouragement, the bane of learners. A completed project builds confidence in a God-given talent.  Proficiency is gained by diligent practice.

This book, also available as a pdf., can be printed one-sided, bound, then folded to fit in a bookcase. Firstly, the book should be bound along the short edge. Then the first page is folded down at the 5 ¾ inch mark. That will leave ½ inch for binding. The rest of the pages should be folded forward at the 5 ¾ inch mark.  The extra page at the back is for a pocket page for notes or samples. Next each page can have the second half trimmed down 1in. x 5 ¼ in. at the top so that when folded one can see the title and Roman Numeral of the side on the left.  We hope this little manual will be a useful tool in the training a happy seamstress.

Questions about Sewing

How is sewing comparable to penmanship?

Firstly, both are life skills needed for day-to-day life. Patterns we make for sewing projects need to be measured and labelled. Instructions need to be written out for reference while sewing.
Eye-hand co-ordination is developing during both disciplines.  Cloth is all around us and it needs to be sewn in construction or repair.  The printed word is in the educated world and one needs to be able to read and to write it.

Why does one even want to sew?

A desire to sew is sparked by a need to sew something that is required. For the young it might be a pouch or an apron, or even just to learn the skill because Grandma sews.  For an adult it might be a hand bag or a table cloth or to have a hobby and share the results of it.  Sewing therefore is a useful skill.

What will I learn in this sewing course?

It begins with basic stitches by hand and later, stitches by machine. You will be encouraged to collect basic tools and to construct simple items at first.  Success is the best incentive to later projects.

What should I do to avoid discouragement at sewing?
Do not give up if something goes awry.  Start with a prayer and ask your guardian angel to help you continue. Take out the mistaken stitches and correct the mistake if that’s the best solution. Sometimes you may need to trim the mistake or cut a new piece and insert it.  If you are tired, take a break and continue with renewed attention.  Use tricks to sew straight seams.  Double check pinning of right sides and wrong sides, measure and check before you cut out fabric.

What are the benefits of sewing?

It is a wholesome activity which promotes self-mastery of time, focus, and movement. Sewing exercises manual dexterity, visual acuity, and the evaluation of color, patterns, and styles. It develops a keen sense of what’s possible in a finished sewing project. Mental organizational ability works in carrying out a project to the finish. A completed project gives confidence in a God-given talent. Proficiency gradually grows with diligent practice.
